Mia, a Detroit native, joined Driver’s when we opened, having heard about the store from our own Jonathan Alexander, whom she had worked with at Zingerman’s, the legendary food mecca in Ann Arbor. Mia brings to Driver’s great knowledge and experience from a year studying Italian food in Italy, a year studying pastry arts in New York, and then three years working as a pastry cook. (Her favorite treat at Driver’s: the kouign-amman we carry from Starter Bakery.)
Mia has set up an expanding selection of gift items, including stationery, candles and a unique selection of greeting cards. When you care enough to send the very best, you can now send one of our lovingly crafted cards from small presses such as Missive, Fat Bunny Press or Dutch Door Press. Or splurge on one-of-a-kind watercolor cards made right in Sausalito. “One of the things I love about Driver’s is that we are so much more than just a food store,” says Mia di Tommaso, who has put together our new collection of gift items, greeting cards and stationery.
Mia curates our chocolates as well, which makes her advice in demand around Valentine’s Day. For an extra-special Valentine, Mia suggests gâté comme des filles truffles made by hand by former Chez Panisse pastry cook Alexandra Whisnant.
