May 2025 – Reducing landfill waste in the bathroom can be tricky. Plastic is not as recyclable as we used to think, and most skincare products come in single-use containers. Plastic bottles and tubes fill our medicine cabinets, and sometimes the trash bin, too. With a few adjustments, and these innovative products, you can cut back waste in your bathroom.

A few brands really stand out for zero-waste efforts. Mother Earth products are fully compostable, including their tooth and nail brushes, soap saver pouch, loofah, and washcloths. HiBar redefines bar soaps with elevated shampoo and conditioner, face wash, and their new body wash bars. Sausalito-based Botnia sells most items separately from dispenser tops, and offers free pumps and spray applicators if one is needed. Industry veterans Badger and Bonny Doone have offered plastic-free options at scale for decades. Nevada City’s Fat and the Moon offers a wide array of products in recyclable packaging, from baby care to dry shampoo. In oral care, our flouride-free offerings include compostable packaging from Huppy and Floss Picks.

With so many great products, where to start? A first step is to kick plastic out, even in the shower, and avoid single-use containers. Secondly, recycle and compost toiletries as much as possible.
