Your Personal America, the poetry of Paul Geffner
Poetry surrounds us, making us realize the slimness of the membrane between internal and external worlds. In his book, Your Personal America, Sausalito poet Paul Geffner explores the America familiar to so many of us, as well as territory new and uncharted. Along the way he saves Christmas, kills the Easter Bunny, and contemplates why dinosaurs speak English in cartoons. Paul joined us Around the Table in August 2018 to read some of his favorite poems — his own and others. Here is an excerpt from his book, the title poem ‘Your Personal America’.

Sunscreens contain dozens of chemicals to protect our skin from damaging sun rays. Unfortunately, many of these chemicals are also linked to harmful health effects such as endocrine disruption and cancer. Other chemicals in sunscreens are toxic to coral reefs. Physician and researcher Sarah Janssen joined us to discuss choosing safer sunscreens and protecting ourselves from the sun’s rays.

Walk back in time on Caledonia Street
Sausalito resident Mike Moyle joined us at Driver’s Market to present the history of Caledonia Street. In a talk titled “Golfers, Gangsters and Garages” Mike used historical photographs to tell the stories of Sausalito’s buildings and local characters. In April 2016, Mike gave a similar talk as part of the Sausalito Historical Society that included an exhibit and the Caledonia Street Walking Tour. The Walking Tour featured a numbered photograph identifying the buildings that remain largely unchanged today, more than 85 years later.
Yard Smart Marin
Rika Gopinath of Yard Smart Marin, and Leslie Alden, Aide to Supervisor Kate Sears, joined us at Driver’s to present on the overuse of pesticides in Marin gardens. Research tells us that pesticides like RoundUp Glyphosate are toxic, and the Marin County government has strictly regulated their use over the last decade. Yet RoundUp is routinely used at homes and businesses all over Marin, threatening our environment, our health, and our water. The Yard Smart Marin coalition seeks to change that by promoting a holistic approach to pest control.
In the Supplement Aisle
The supplement department at Driver’s Market is stocked with a selection of carefully chosen vitamins and minerals, and is organized in categories including immunity, hydration, digestion and more. Driver’s supplement buyer, Danya Mosgofian, evaluates products and companies before bringing them in, and does the homework for our customers. “I prefer food-based products because they absorb better. Non-GMO, preferably organic, and no giant corporate manufacturers,” said Danya.

We welcomed friends from Mimi’s Confitures, Wrecking Ball Coffee, Marin Kombucha, Point Reyes Farmstead Creamery, and Beck’s Bakery for a discussion about what it takes for a small food business to succeed in the Bay Area.
